Concept – Loungey Wedding
An idea inspired by the fabulous wedding mentioned earlier, which The Boy seemed to think was pretty decent.
Imagine a pretty outdoor location (I haven’t been able to move beyond Matilda Bay Reserve), decked out a bit like a lounge or beer garden with some couches, some tables and chairs, and big market umbrellas for shade. Maybe some potted plants and some little homemade sculptures for decor. Woodfired pizza and simple platters for food (a quick web search came up with a few places that actually bring a woodfiring oven out to you – awesome!), and of course lots of drinks. Some chilled out music and a loungey afternoon reception timeslot.

Kind of like this, but in a garden (pic: The Brisbane Hotel)
This works well for us, as we’re definitely more Sunday sesh loungey beer garden people than grand ballroom, three course meal and chair covers people. Getting to put together a wedding from scratch rather than going with a more typical venue package means we can control the whole look and feel to be more ‘us’, even if it does take more work. I’m hoping that the comparatively cheaper food and beverage expenses will balance out the extra expense of furniture and equipment.
There are a few issues though:
- The whole thing falls through if it rains. We could just switch to a marquee if it looks like it will rain, but a marquee is a huge cost even if it isn’t last minute, so it would be quite a pain!
- The weather being too hot/too chilly
- Flies and bugs… my maid of honour is a mosquito magnet
- Finding a hire place that has the kind of furniture I want, instead of just plastic chairs
- Would need to get suitable toilets. That’s something the blogs never mention when showing cool outdoor weddings
- Would most likely be in a public place, so could have issues with disruptive gatecrashers and noise restrictions
